The work of numerous personalities, historians, scientists, artists, musicians and athletes has been shaped by South Tyrol/Südtirol, including the well-known mountaineer Reinhold Messner. Brought up in Funes/Villnöss in South Tyrol, today he resides in Juval Castle near Naturno/Naturns. This imposing structure is also home to one of the six Messner Mountain Museums and provides insights into the lives of mountain people.

Merano and Environs is also home to many world-class athletes: for example the multiple Olympic sledging champion, Armin Zöggeler, or the world champion ice climber, Angelika Rainer. Leading figures of science and technology such as Peter Mitterhofer (inventor of the typewriter), the funicular pioneer Luis Zuegg or the electrical engineer and inventor Johann Kravogl also originated from this area.
