In Merano, music has played an important role for centuries. Its importance is expressed in the presence of countless bands rooted in the countryside and valleys and their inevitable presence at all traditional festivals. In the 19th century, the Merano Orchestra (Kurorchester) was well-known throughout the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Among the most important local music events are the Garden Nights World Music festival in the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, and the International Merano Music Weeks which run from late August to late September. Along with the Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige, which is held in specific open-air locations, there is also the MeranoJazz Festival, followed by the international Brassfestival.
