Merano and Environs is an area with a particularly large amount of geocaches. These electronic treasure hunts (better known as geocaching) are a great way of exploring the area around the spa town of Merano/Meran in South Tyrol/Südtirol using GPS technology. Modern treasure hunters, so-called geocachers, set out in search of caches (i.e. buried or hidden treasures) using GPS receivers.
Caches in Merano and Environs
Hidden treasures lie waiting to be discovered not only in many historic buildings in Merano and Environs, but also through the sightseeing Telescopes. Geocaching enthusiasts will find QR codes at the buildings and telescopes in the brochure entitled Telescopes in Merano and Environs (Hingucker im Meraner Land), which will lead them to each individual cache.
A walk, even with kids, can provide cachers with the opportunity of an exciting treasure hunt, and the Parcines Tourist Association also arranges introductory geocaching excursions. A multi-cache Family Treasure Hunt is held in the center of the nearby locality of Naturno/Naturns, where the challenge is to master several different levels in order to discover the location of the hidden cache.
