Mountain Biking on the Nörderberg and Sonnenberg Mountains

The Venosta Valley has been one of the top destinations for mountain bikers for some years now: downhillers, freeriders, enduro and all-mountain riders will find an excellently developed trail network here.

Although Naturno is one of the younger mountain bike destinations in South Tyrol, it was able to position itself right at the front with its diverse range of offers. From the bottom of the valley up to over 3,000 metres: Mountain biking in Naturno means kilometres of single trails on 315 sunny days a year. Numerous mountain bike tours lead to the alpine pastures and mountain inns in the area, on the trail of the famous BIKE Transalp mountain bike stage race.

A classic among the mountain bike tours in Naturno is the tour to the mountain pasture Naturnser Alm. After a total distance of 40 km and 1,500 metres of altitude covered, you are rewarded by the panoramic view of the Venosta Valley, the Texelgruppe Nature Park, the Ötztal Alps, the Dolomites and the Ortler Group. An absolute highlight - among countless other tours - is, for example, the Early Bird Ride at sunrise on the Monte Tramontana / Naturnser Nörderberg. Less trained mountain bikers simply resort to the support of an e-mountain bike.

ÖTZI BIKE ACADEMY
Over the last few years, new signposted trails have been added on both sides of the valley to form a varied network of routes for pleasure bikers and trail enthusiasts, which are connected to cable cars or can be reached by special bike shuttle services. Bikepoints such as the Ötzi Bike Academy in Naturno, the largest bike school in South Tyrol, organises guided tours for all ability levels as well as theme weeks, has a technical training area and a bike rental service, and expands the service for guests in cooperation with hotels and guesthouses.

ENJOYMENT ON THE MOUNTAIN
Alpine huts and snack stations serve homemade South Tyrolean specialities when you stop for a break. Selected local establishments tailor their culinary offer to the needs of bikers and also guarantee a special bike service. And as if that were not enough highlights, the Bike Highline Merano closes the bracket around this wide range of tours. The MTB high trail connects the alpine pastures of the Nörderberg over a length of 19 kilometres.

No matter which route you choose, the bike and mountain bike map offers useful additional information and tour tips for successful mountain biking in Naturno.

Bike Highline Merano

Discover the Monte Tramontana of Naturno

On a route of fabulous 19 kilometres, the Bike Highline Merano connects the alpine pastures on the Monte Tramontana from the mountain pasture Marzoner Alm above Castelbello in the west to the Monte San Vigilio high above Merano.

Always at an altitude of between 1,450 and 1,900 metres, the Bike Highline runs from west to east, crossing a multitude of uphills as well as four brand new single trails.

ENTRANCES BIKE HIGHLINE MERANO
There are several entrances to the highline: For pleasure bikers, simply take the panoramic cable car from Rablà to the picturesque mountain hamlet of Rio Lagundo and save yourself the 800 metres of ascent. On the other hand, those who want to pedal hard in the valley can tackle one of the four uphills that lead from the villages of Tel, Naturno, Ciardes and Castelbello directly to the Bike Highline Merano. Alternatively, a shuttle service conserves energy and takes bikers at regular intervals to the Kreuzbrünnl and Freiberger Säge car parks - with access to the highline.

PAST ALPINE PASTURES
It took three years to implement the Bike Highline Merano project. Since 2014, connecting routes between the old forest roads and the new single trails now form a varied network of a total of 25 officially rideable trails. The Bike Highline Merano climbs about 600 metres in an easterly direction and 700 metres in a westerly direction. The high trail on the Monte Tramontana, for example, leads in not very steep and scenically unique sections past farmed alpine pastures again and again. From the Marzoner Alm to the Tablander Alm and on the way to the Mauslochalm, the route is technically more demanding in places; it continues on forest paths to the Zetn Alm, the Naturnser Alm and the Monte San Vigilio high plateau.

TRAILS OF THE BIKE HIGHLINE
You can return to the valley on the forest paths of the Uphills, in a relaxed way on the Family Tour starting in Rio Lagundo or with more speed and adrenaline kicks on the four single trails. Bikers can choose between the Lupo Trail (S1, short sections S2), the Fontana Trail (S3), the Ötzi Trail (S3) and the Stuanbruch Trail (S3). These highlights on the Monte Tramontana can be accessed at various points along the Bike Highline Merano. In this way, uphills, visits to alpine pastures and crisp trail descents can be combined again and again to create the perfect bike tour.
