Take a stroll

From early spring into late autumn a stroll along the irrigation channels surrounding Lana offers wonderful panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and over the Adige Valley, as well as an interesting insight into the diverse cultivated landscapes.

These ancient paths offer a unique charm and should not be missed. They meander gently through vineyards, apple orchards and chestnut groves along the lower mountain range. They were originally built for practical reasons. The so called „Waale" are irrigation channels that were built to water fields and meadows. The water was sent through small channels for many kilometres. The pathways running parallel served mainly for maintenance purposes.

From Lana you can easily reach two of these paths: the Brandis Waalweg and the Marlinger Waalweg.

The Brandis Waalwag
Takes a left from the Gampenstraße Road in Oberlana and leads via the monastery Kloster Lanegg and St. Margareths Church to the waterfall in the Brandis Canyon in Niederlana. The path runs through orchards, vineyards and chestnut groves and offers beautiful views of the Tschögglberg Mountain, Lana and the Merano Valley Basin.
Walking time: ¾ h, level of difficulty: easy

The Marlinger Waalweg
The 13 km long Marlinger Waalweg starts at a narrow section of the valley near Töll and runs along the slope of the Marlinger Mountain above the villages of Forst, Marlengo and Cermes and finally ends in Lana. The path meanders through meadows, orchards and vineyards. There is also time for a worthwhile stop-over at the Castle Lebenberg in Cermes, where guided tours are offered.
