The film is based on a true story and tells the tale of Alvin Straight, a farmer from Iowa who, in 1994 at the age of 73, undertook a long journey on a riding lawn mower to visit his brother who had recently suffered a heart attack. Straight covered a distance of 317 miles (approximately 510 kilometers) in 6 weeks, traveling at 5 miles per hour (8 km/h).
