Scenic circular hike to Jaufenburg Castle

Directions

Start at the tourist office in St. Leonhard and first follow the main road towards the village centre. From the village bridge, turn right into Kirchweg an follow the signs for the "Sonnenrundgang". Then take the first street on the left into Im Schaffeld and at the first fork always keep right following th signs.

Continue along the road until you reach a bridge that leads you uphill to Jaufenburg Castle.

Follow the castle path past the Chapel of the Holy Cross, then turn right onto the "Sonnenrundgang". Continue along the trail to the highest point of the hike (835 m), where a viewing platform awaits you with a breathtaking view of the Passeiertal Valley.

Following the signs, you return to the Schlossweg an finally head back to the village centre of St. Leonhard via Gerichtsweg.

The trail is not suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.

Recommended equipment

Wear sturdy hiking boots, appropriate cloting for the weather and bring sufficient water and provisions.

Description to arrive at destination

  • Coming from Meran towards the Passeiertal Valley, take the Jaufenstraße SS44 to St. Leonhard
  • Coming from the Jaufenpass towards Meran, take the Jaufenstraße SS44 to St. Leonhard
  • Coming from the Timmelsjoch towards Moos, continue on the Timmelsjochstraße towards St. Leonhard

  • Busline 240 from Pfelders, Moos heading towards St. Leonhard, Merano
  • Busline 239 from the Jaufenpass, from Walten heading towards St. Leonhard
