Winter Hike from Pfelders into the Lazinsertal Valley

Leisurely winter hiking in the serene, snow-covered mountains, along clearly-traced trails.

Light forests and mountain meadows alternate along the entire route, with easy climbs and flat sections. In winter, the track is regularly maintained with a snow groomer.

Starting point: parking lot Pfelders

End point: parking lot Pfelders

Directions

From the car park in Pfelders, follow the road into the village. At the junction by the school, keep left, leaving Hotel Pfeldererhof on your left and Hotel Alpenblick on your right, and after a few metres you reach trail no. 8.

Continue along the narrow road, passing the village and heading further into the valley. Cross a ski slope above the ice rink and then continue gently uphill along the wide, groomed hiking trail. Further into the valley, cross the Faltschnalbach stream and, following a wide bend, reach the ancient farm settlement of Lazins with its mountain inn.

From here, continue following trails no. 8 and 24 further into the valley. You soon reach the wide basin of Lazins Alm Alp. The groomed trail leads you uphill to the newly built alpine hut. Here, you can enjoy the peaceful tranquillity of the unspoilt landscape and admire the steep rock faces and the almost 3,500-metre-high peaks of Hohe Wilde and Seelenkogel Peak, which dramatically enclose the valley basin.

For the return journey, follow the same route back to Lazins. Shortly before the farm settlement of Lazins, however, cross the bridge on your left and follow trail no. 24. On the sunny left-hand side of the valley, walk uphill over several sections to the high-altitude settlement of Zeppichl. From here, a wide hiking trail leads you back down to Pfelders.

Recommended equipment

Wear warm, weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy and waterproof hiking boots and, if necessary, traction aids such as microspikes or crampons. Walking poles can provide additional support on snowy and slippery trails.

• Coming from Meran towards the Passeiertal Valley, take the Jaufenstraße/via Passo Giovo SS44 to St. Leonhard, continue towards Moos, take on the Timmelsjochstraße and continue on the SP114 to Pfelders

• Coming from the Timmelsjoch, take on the Timmelsjochstraße to Moos and continue on the SP114 to Pfelders

• Coming from the Jaufenpass towards St. Leonhard, take the Jaufenstraße S44, continue towards Moos on the Timmelsjochstraße and continue on the SP114 to Pfelders

Author's tip

Always stay on marked trails, check the current weather and snow conditions before setting off, and take particular care on icy, slippery or snow-covered sections.

Take enough water and food with you and plan your hike so that you return before it gets dark.

Check the current trail conditions in advance and take note of any closures or avalanche warnings.

Please observe the signs (i.e. danger of avalanche warnings) and abide by them in all cases! The trail just after Pfelders is also frequented by skiers and riders on sleds. The nearby cross-country ski run should be avoided. Please be warned that winter conditions on the trail between Lazins and Zeppichl can be icy, depending on the actual situation.
