In 2011, a new teacher, Sergio Juarèz Correa, arrived at the José Urbina López primary school in Matamoros, which was being run poorly. In an oppressive environment, torn apart by violence from the drug cartels, the school’s pupils achieved some of the lowest academic results in the whole of Mexico. Due to dilapidated facilities and a lack of teaching resources such as computers, most teachers are demotivated and focus primarily on ensuring their classes pass the government-imposed standardised tests, which do nothing to encourage genuine learning.
