FAI Autumn: Church of St George in Maia Alta/Obermais

The Church of St George is a Roman Catholic church situated in the Maia Alta district of the municipality of Merano. It forms part of the Diocese of Bolzano-Bressanone.



The history of the Church of St George in Maia Alta dates back to the Middle Ages. The earliest record dates from 1256, when Adelaide of Tyrol mentioned it in a bequest for the salvation of her father Albert III’s soul. At that time, St George’s was part of the parish of St Vigilius in Maia, in what is now Maia Bassa.

The Maia Alta neighbourhood is a little way out of the centre of Merano, but it can be easily reached by public transport from Merano railway station on line 1, or on foot along a section of the beautiful Sissi Promenade.
