Book presentation in italian: Merano e la costruzione dell'identità italiana

9/23/2026 18:00 - 19:00

The history of the ‘Carducci’ Grammar School and Classical High School in Merano from 1923 to 1945 is compiled in this volume, the result of extensive research based on archive documents, school yearbooks, minutes of staff meetings and contemporary newspaper reports. The study analyses the role played by the Italian school within the context of the ‘Italianisation’ of South Tyrol during the Fascist regime, highlighting the relationship between the educational institution, cultural policy and the building of consensus.

Particular attention is paid to the inner workings of the school – teachers, pupils, ceremonies, cultural activities and school trips – as a unique vantage point from which to understand the political and social climate of Merano between the two world wars. This historical research restores memory and a human face to a complex period in Merano’s history.
