Alma is an archaeologist working at a museum in Berlin, and she thinks of nothing but her major research project. The only exception is a favour for a colleague, for whom she acts as a ‘tester’ of the very latest technology in robotics: a custom-built android partner designed to satisfy its owner’s every physical, emotional or intellectual desire, whether conscious or not. Sceptical but willing to put up with a three-week trial, Alma invites Tom into her home—a machine programmed to make her happy but grappling with a subject who seeks neither romance or a relationship.
