The permanent teacher has to take leave because she is about to give birth, and German teacher Zupan arrives at the Slovenian high school to replace her. The man's methods are rigid, cold and punitive in the eyes of a class accustomed to a climate of friendly negotiation between students and teachers. When a student, Sabina, commits suicide for no apparent reason, her distraught classmates blame the teacher and his overly demanding requirements.
