Inspired by the
Ötzi Alpine Marathon, one of the most intensive extreme sports events in the Alps, in 2019 the idea was born to create a similar event for the trail run scene.The new trail run event is named after the world-famous
glacier mummy Ötzi, who was found nearby on September 19, 1991.
The world-famous glacier mummy Ötzi was discovered by hikers thanks to a series of improbable coincidences at the Tisenjoch in the
Schnalstal Valley. He was murdered at the site over 5,300 years ago, and had been naturally preserved by the ice; therefore the famous "Iceman" is older than the Egyptian pyramids, and accordingly an archaeological sensation!
Since 1998 Ötzi has been exhibited in the
South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano/Bozen. Stored in a special cooling chamber, the preserved mummy is visible to visitors through a small window. His equipment and clothing have also been extensively restored in recent years.
The
Archeoparc in Madonna di Senales/Unser Frau im Schnalstal is an open-air archaeology museum for the whole family. The exhibitions and open grounds offer insights into the life and work of Ötzi and his times and invite visitors to immerse themselves in the world of the Copper Age: Visitors can see original houses, play with bows and arrows, bake bread, or build a fire – all in Stone Age style, of course!
