Castles and Fortresses in Merano

Old walls tell a story

In South Tyrol, fortified castles had their greatest importance in the medieval era, when the vassals of the Etschtal Valley rebelled against the authority of the Bishops and Counts of Trent, Brixen and Chur.

Many of these castles later developed additional features: museums, sanatoria or hotels, which in turn preserved them from decline. By the 19th century, there also emerged new residences and palaces in Merano/Meran, which now function as residences, wine cellars or restaurants. These include the Prince’s Castle, the castles of Rametz and Labers, Pienzenau, Rubein and Kallmünz.
