Castle Circular Trail at winter

General description

Easy and eventful hike with wonderful views of Prissian/Prissiano and its castles. Not suitable for pushchairs at winter.

Attention: the path is not cleared in winter and can be icy in places. Always wear good shoes!

Route description

Starting from the car park in Prissiano village centre (near the Raiffeisen bank), head right over the old, wood-covered stone bridge and on the pavement along the main road for approx. 200 m. At the second turn off to the right, head slightly uphill to Castel Wehrburg. The castle, which was built no later than the 13th century was lovingly converted into a hotel in 1956 and is still used as one today. Now turn left on the wide farm track slightly downhill (view of the ruins of Castel Casaccia/Pfeffersburg, which was built in 1194, on the opposite hillside) as far as the main road leading out of Nalles/Nals. Cross over this, head a couple of metres uphill, and then turn right along the wide, gravel track initially slightly downhill and then uphill to Castel Katzenzungen and the largest, and probably also oldest grapevine in the world, the Versoaln vine. Next head slightly uphill to the main road and follow the pavement back to the village centre. On the return route there is a lovely view of the Fahlburg - in the hands of the Counts of Brandis for over 400 years - which rises up in the middle of the village.
