Geocaching around Schenna
Hiking in combination with geocaching means enjoying stunning views, breathing fresh mountain air, and discovering hidden treasures in Schenna and the Merano region.

The adventurous treasure hunt known as “Geocaching” has become a trending outdoor activity since its development in 2004 and now boasts a large and enthusiastic fan base. Geocaching (from the Greek “geo” meaning “earth” and English “cache” meaning “secret storage”) is a modern form of treasure hunt and offers fun and excitement for adventurers of all ages.

Schenna is the perfect starting point for this unique activity, with around 200 km of hiking trails in its surroundings. The area of Merano 2000 and Avelengo adds another 300 km where many treasures are hidden. This is how the digital treasure hunt works: waterproof containers are hidden all over the Merano region, containing small trade items and a logbook. The precise coordinates are entered into an online geocaching database. Using these coordinates and a GPS device, you can find the “caches” – the treasures – around Schenna. Each geocacher who finds a container can trade an item and sign the logbook. The container is then re-hidden in the same place.

Geocaching is a great way to explore South Tyrol and the landscape around Schenna. This new form of hiking awakens a sense of adventure in children and gives adults a touch of “treasure hunt fever.” Along the way, you'll discover secret and untouched spots that regular hikers would likely miss.
