MeranoKlezmerDance 25

The small festival of Yiddish culture in Merano. By donation.

Meran has a fascinating Yiddish history. Those who rediscover it will also get to know „Klezmer music“ and many beautiful songs in Yiddish, hitherto lost treasures of a lost world: „Klezmer“ is more than just a style, it is a memory, a language, a story, a ritual dance of life, a culture.
Programma

Shabbat-inspired talk with the musicians Rosamond van Wingerden, Peter Sint Nicolaas, moderated by Frieda Haupt. Singer Rosamond van Wingerden and trumpeter Peter Sint Nicolaas are two dedicated young musicians who travelled from Brussels and had the courage to tour Odessa in June. They played courageously and fearlessly, even during the still frequent air raid sirens. They bring us ‘Yiddish Lid’ and historically informed klezmer music, just as it was once sung in Odessa. Rosamond and Peter will tell us about their experiences in the city in this Shabbat-inspired ‘Talk with Music’. The Gospel Choir will contribute with songs. Did you know that the Neapolitan song ‘O sole mio’ was also composed in Odessa? Odessa was once a multicultural metropolis...
Saturday, October 11, 2025, workshop YIDDISH TANTS from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Workshop YIDDISH LID – Frieda Haupt from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
ODESSA – Verità o realtà? Isaak Babel o Sergej Eisenstein?

workshop YIDDISH TANTS from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Workshop YIDDISH LID – Frieda Haupt from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
What is historically informed klezmer? Is it even possible to know how music was played in the shtetl over a hundred years ago?
Yes, we can. Just a few years ago, thousands of old manuscripts, handwritten notes and texts, stories and customs were found in Kiev. And that's not all. Clever museum employees also stored old wax cylinders in cellars and boxes, so that they survived two world wars. Field researchers such as Kiselgof, Makonovetsky, Engel and others sent their handwritten notes to the musicologist Moishe Beregovskij in St. Petersburg, then Leningrad, even in the most difficult times. Today they are kept in the National Library in Kiev. A dedicated community of musicians is now conveying how people played back then. We show some of the old manuscripts – and don't be surprised if Peter Sint Nicolaas plays his trumpet in a way you would never have imagined... historical information is not just about musical notation! But didn't we want to try out for ourselves in the workshop what so-called ‘sobs’ and ‘croaks’ mean in klezmer music and how beautiful they can sound?
