Hike on the "Maiser Waalweg" Trail

From the Hirzer cable car parking area in Saltaus/Saltusio, you start your hike and follow trail no. 1 donwhill to the Passer dam path. There, you follow the signs "Maiser Waalweg" and continue on to the Farmhouse Torgglerhof

From here, the Waalweg (irrigation channel trail) leads you comfortably to the centre of Merano/Meran. From Merano/Meran you can easily take the bus (line 240) back to Saltaus/Saltusio.

Alternatively, you have several options along the way: roughly halfway, you can cross the Passer River via trail no. 1 and continue on trail no. 2 towards Riffian/Rifiano. If you stay on the Waalweg side, trail no. 1 qill take you further to Schenna/Scena.

The trail is not suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.

Good to know: the Maiser Waalweg Trail carries water from the first week of April to the last week of October.

Recommended equipment

Wear sturdy hiking boots, appropriate clothing for the weather and bring suffcient water and provisions.

  1. Coming from Merano/Meran towards the Passeiertal Valley, take the Jaufenstraße/via Passo Giovo SS44 to Saltaus/Saltusio
  2. Coming from the Jaufenpass/Passo Giovo towards Mernao/Meran, take the Jaufenstraße/via Passo Giovo SS44 to Saltaus/Saltusio
  3. Coming from the Timmelsjoch/Passo Rombo towards Moos/Moso, continue on the Timmelsjochstraße/Via Passo del Romobo towards St. Leonhard/S. Leonardo on the same road, then continue towards Merano/Meran on the Jaufenstraße/via Passo Giovo SS44 to Saltaus/Saltusio

  1. Bus line 240 from Merano/Meran towards St. Leonhard/S. Leonardo, Moos/Moso, Pfelders/Plan
  2. Bus line 240 from Pfelders/Plan, Moos/Moso, St. Leonhard/S. Leonardo towards Merano/Meran
