St. Peter in Tirolo

Historic district on the sunny slopes overlooking Merano

The historic parish of St. Peter stretches between the moat west of Tirolo Castle and the Grabbach nestling in apple orchards, forests and vineyards. Once known as “Kronsbichl” and already used as a settlement area in prehistoric times, nowadays this sunny part of Tirolo is a popular starting point for hikes in the Texel Group Nature Reserve. The parish church, which according to legend was built by a race of dwarves, is especially worthy of mention, as well as the precious Romanesque frescoes and paintings from the pre-Gothic period that can be found inside. The picturesque Thurnstein Castle, which is situated to the west of the village on the slopes of the Mutspitze, is also worth a visit. The castle was first mentioned in the records in 1276 under its original name of “Thurm Platzleid”, whilst the name Thurnstein first appears in 1478. From Merano, St. Peter in Tirolo can be reached in around 10 minutes via the parish of Quarazze/Gratsch (via Laurin).
