Similaun Alpine Tour

General description

This challenging glacier tour for experienced Alpinists, featuring magnificent views of the Ötztal Alps, begins in the Vernago/Vernagt car park with limited parking spaces.

Route description

From the car park by the dam wall of the lake (1,699 m a.s.l), follow trail no. 2. The trail which leads northwestwards up to the centuries old Tisenhof farm (snack stop 1,814 m a.s.l). From the Farmstead Tisenhof, head north on a gentle incline through the Tisental Valley over stepped terrain.
Tip: Schneck archeological discovery site with Neolithic engraved stone near the trail’s edge. At the end of the valley keep to the right and head up to the Refuge Similaun on the Giogo Basso/Niederjoch mountain (3,019 m a.s.l). From the refuge Similaun, head briefly over boulders southwards and then diagonally up to the glacial tongue. Continue upwards over the initially fairly flat but increasingly steep and crevasse-lined glacier. Depending on conditions, one should keep to the middle and avoid the steep part in a wide-ranging right curve. Then climb southwest directly to the summit.
