As much as required – as little as possible
The backpack including provisions and drinks should not exceed one sixth of the own body weight.
- At least 2-litre bottle with drink
- High-energy food such as bananas, muesli bars, wholemeal bread, nuts, etc.
- Small first aid set incl. personal medication (i.e. for allergies)
- Walking map
- Mobile phone and charger
- Watch, pocket knife, torch, lighter, potentially compass
- Down- or fleece jacket as well as hat and gloves for alpine mountains
- Raincoat and rain pants
- Spare clothes
- Sun hat, sun cream, sunglasses (Cat. 3.4)
- Identity card/driver license, membership pass (f. ex. DAV, AVS, CAI, etc.)
- Sleeping bag for use at mountain huts, slipper socks, track suit, ear plugs
- Towel, tooth brush, toothpaste, deodorant, detergent
A good backpack with waistbelt prevents back pain. Light luggage and clothing should be placed at the bottom of the backpack. Heavier objects, such as water, provisions etc., should be placed in the middle and near the body. Smaller objects should be placed at the top of the backpack. Important or required often required objects should be ready to hand – these are placed in the outside pockets.
