Gargazon/Gargazzone - Kröll Tower Trail

The Kröllturm above Gargazon also adorns the coat of arms of the village.

General description

The "Kröllturmrunde" ... all around this is not difficult! Observation platform and rest areas make the newly designed path on Kröllturm varied and attractive.

Above Gargazon, the Kröll tower, which dates back to the Middle Ages, rises out of the forest. But the tower is not at the beginning of the way. From the village square in Gargazon, a guidance system guides hikers to the Kröllturmrunde, access and view to the waterfall included.

You should not have it in a hurry. Rather, the Kröllturmrunde is a pleasure hike for the whole family. Along the way there are rest areas, some with loungers, others with seating. They are called "Halfway", "Untermturm" and "Obernturm", also at the old quarry there are rest opportunities with beach chairs.

And after the hike? Nothing like in the water: best in the natural pool in Gargazzone, the only public natural bath in the west of South Tyrol, sustainably built, of course created and easily accessible, even by bike, bus and train.

Route description

Start: From the car park in Gargazon, walk past the upper church (parish church Herz Jesu), cross the main road and follow the signs for Aschlbach Wasserfall - Kröllturm.
The ascent begins at the outskirts of the village through a mixed forest (hiking trail no. 7), which offers beautiful views of the Etsch Valley again and again. Over a stone staircase and then again on a narrow footpath you climb up to the branch waterfall of the Aschler Bach.
The short detour over the well-secured wooden bridges is very worthwhile. The water of the Aschler brook roars 47 meters vertically into the bay and whirls up fresh steam. A very impressive experience.

After a short walk back to the hiking trail, you reach the Kröllturm, a square tower.

Way back: the 3rd highlight of the short hike is the old quarry (hiking trail no. 7A), where you can still discover excavated stone slabs. A short zig-zag path takes you to the Gargazon houses and back to the starting point.
