10.5 km long, comfortable walk at 450 m altitude, above the villages of Lana, Tscherms and Marling.
Those who are not yet tired of the hike can take the Algunder Waalweg (end Marlinger Waalweg, across the road, cross the small bridge in the direction of Lagundo) and then the Tappeinerweg (to Merano center) in the hike.
Directions
Walking beside the water, passing vineyards and chestnut groves and enjoying wide views across the Merano basin: the Marlinger Waalweg combines gentle hiking with a varied cultural landscape. From Lana, the approximately 10.5 km route runs above Tscherms/Cermes and Marling/Marlengo to Töll/Tel. After the short, steeper approach, the trail becomes largely level and follows the historic irrigation channel. Apple orchards, vineyards, chestnut trees and woodland line the way, with views opening out towards Merano and the surrounding mountains. Several places to stop for refreshments can also be found along the route.
The trail’s east-facing position is worth considering when choosing the best time for your walk. It catches the sun from early morning, while many sections gradually move into the shade during the afternoon. This makes spring and autumn particularly pleasant, as well as the early hours of mild winter days, when the morning sun provides welcome warmth. In midsummer, woods and chestnut groves still offer plenty of cool, shaded stretches. Even so, on hot days the afternoon is the recommended time to walk the trail.
Once you reach Töll/Tel, public transport provides an easy return to Lana via Merano. If you feel like extending the walk, you can also continue onto the Algunder Waalweg at the end of the Marlinger Waalweg.
Access. The access to the Waalweg is in Raffeingasse. From the Ultnerstraße road towards the Ultimo Valley, continue for around 100 m to Café Diversus and turn right into Villenerweg. After approximately 200 m, turn left into Raffeingasse, which leads directly to the start of the trail. The Marlinger Waalweg is already well signposted from Ultnerstraße. The paved approach is fairly steep for around 200 m. Once you reach the Waalweg, the route becomes largely level and follows the irrigation channel towards Tscherms/Cermes, Marling/Marlengo and Töll/Tel. Open sections alternate with orchards, vineyards, chestnut groves and shady woodland, and there are several opportunities to stop for refreshments along the way.
Continue along the Marlinger Waalweg all the way to its end at Töll/Tel. From there, you can return to Lana conveniently by public transport via Merano.
