Mountain Tour to "Stuller Hochwart" Peak (2,608 m)

Magnificent panoramic mountain with a partly exposed but well-secured ascent to the summit.

Directions

Your tour starts at the parking area next to the church in Stuls (1,315 m). Follow trail no. 14, initially along a paved road leading to Morx Puite (1,570 m). A steeper forest trail then takes you to the Hochegg paid parking area, which can also be used as an alternative starting point.

From Hochegg, continue following trail no. 14. Follow the paved road until, a few metres after the third hairpin bend, you turn left onto a forest trail. After crossing two forest roads, you reach the extensive Stuller Mahder (large alpine meadows) and finally the Egger-Grub-Alm Alp (1,943 m).

From the mountain hut, trail no. 14 continues steeply uphill across alpine meadows and, in the final section, over scree interspersed with marble, leading to refuge Hochalm (2,174 m).

From there, follow trail no. 26 in a north-easterly direction, traversing diagonally across the slope, around a mountain ridge and along a narrow path to the junction for Stuller Hochwart Peak. Turn left and climb through several hairpin bends onto a narrow ridge. Flatter terrain then leads you towards the summit area, which consists of crystalline limestone.

The final metres are covered over solid rock with some easy scrambling secured by a fixed steel cable, leading you to the summit of Stuller Hochwart (2,608 m).

The descent follows the ascent route.

The route is not suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.

Recommended equipment

War sturdy hiking boots, appropriate clothing for the weather and bring sufficient water and provisions.

• Coming from Meran towards the Passeiertal Valley, take the Jaufenstraße SS44 to St. Leonhard, continue on the Timmelsjochstraße to Moos. After Moos, turn right and continue to Stuls

• Coming from the Timmelsjoch, take the Timmelsjochstraße until just before Moos, then turn left and continue to Stuls

• Coming from the Jaufenpass towards St. Leonhard, take the Jaufenstraße SS44, continue on the Timmelsjochstraße towards Moos and further along the Timmelsjochstraße. After Moos, turn right and continue to Stuls

The ascent to just below the summit is steep and strenuous, but not demanding if you are careful. The last 10 metres of ascent are almost vertical, but the step-like rocks of crystalline limestone and a taut wire rope offer very good hold, so that no one who has come this far actually has to give up the summit.

Always stay on marked trails, check the weather conditions before you hike and pay particular attention to snow, wet ground, or slippery sections.
