Cacti and Olives in the Vineyard - Botanical Hike to the Niederebenhof

On the Nörderberg mountain in Partschins, at a lofty 634 metres above sea level, there is a kind of Mediterranean enclave to be found at the Niederebenhof. At least in terms of the landscape. This is because, where you would normally only expect to see deciduous trees and conifers, there are instead olive trees alongside Garda cypresses and vines alongside cacti. In between or nearby, figs, almonds and artichokes flourish. To blame for this idiosyncratic expression of nature are the extremely mild temperatures in this “climate niche” that is sheltered from both the wind and cold and allows the growth of southern vegetation. Every Thursday, Claudia Gilli accompanies visitors on a Botanical hike from the valley station of the Aschbach cable car up to the Niederebenhof, and in the process reveals exciting and informative nuggets about the fascinating Alpine-Mediterranean symbiosis on the Nörderberg.
