When summer slowly comes to an end and the days grow shorter, the cows return from the mountain pastures to the valley. The cattle drives mark the end of the summer grazing season and have been part of rural tradition in South Tyrol for many generations.
The animals spend the summer months on the high pastures, where they are cared for by the alpine herdsman. This form of alpine farming still shapes the landscape and rural life in the Ultental valley today.
The cattle drives usually begin in late August and, depending on the pasture, take place until mid-September. For the return journey the animals are traditionally festively decorated and led down to the valley by the farmers. Colourful flowers, wreaths and the typical bells are indispensable.
Once in the valley the animals are met by numerous spectators. Afterwards, everyone celebrates together at a small village festival.
