General description
Roteck / Monte Rosso (3,337 m) is the highest peak in the Texel Group Nature Park. The ascent through the Zieltal Valley (Val di Tel) is long and partly steep, so this tour is best planned as a two-day hike, with an overnight stay at Lodnerhütte (Rifugio Cima Fiammante, 2,259 m).
Route description
Starting Point
Texelbahn Cable Car Mountain Station
End Point
Texelbahn Cable Car Mountain Station
Texelbahn – Merano High Mountain Trail Nr. 24 – Nasereit Hut – trail 8 – Zielalm (Malga Ziel) – Lodnerhütte (Rifugio Cima Fiammante) – trail 9 – trail 9A – “Schafbank” – east ridge – Roteck / Monte Rosso – return same route
From the Texelbahn mountain station, follow the Merano High Mountain Trail Nr. 24 eastwards to Nasereit Hut (1,525 m).
Here, trail 8 leads down into the Zieltal Valley (Val di Tel) and continues past Zielalm (Malga Ziel, 2,196 m) to Lodnerhütte / Rifugio Cima Fiammante (2,259 m).
From the hut, head west on trail 9 towards Roteck. At a trail junction, keep right on trail 9A, climbing steep grassy slopes to a grassy hollow known as “Schafbank”.
Continue along the east ridge of Roteck, mostly well-marked terrain (cairns also help with orientation), towards the summit ridge.
Safety note: Due to several rockfalls around the summit ridge area (approx. 3,200 m), the ascent has become considerably more difficult. Although chains and a few iron steps are in place, this key section is suitable only for very experienced mountaineers. Sure footing and a head for heights are essential, and carrying safety equipment is strongly recommended.
After the key section, the route reaches another ridge shoulder and then follows the short final ridge to the summit cross of Roteck / Monte Rosso (3,337 m).
Descend via the same route.
