Partschins centre – Gaudententurm residence – Saxnerweg (26A) – Vellau – trail 22 Vellauer Felsenweg – Hochmuth mountain station
The hike starts in the centre of Partschins at the bus turning point. Passing the Gaudententurm residence, follow trail 10B across the Töllgraben. The route then continues on the Saxnerweg trail (26A), climbing steadily through woodland and open terrain to Vellau (906 m).
After a short stretch on the asphalt road, the path reaches the Vellau church. Just behind the church, turn left onto trail 22, the Vellauer Felsenweg trail. The first section runs through forest before the trail continues along steep, rocky slopes below the peak Mutspitze.
Some exposed sections are secured with chains and require sure-footedness and a head for heights. In return, hikers are rewarded with stunning panoramic views over the Merano basin. The trail ends at the Hochmuth cable car mountain station (around 1,400 m).
Tip
- A short ascent leads to the viewing platform below the Steinegg restaurant, offering a magnificent panoramic view of the Merano mountain landscape.
- Start early in summer, as the exposed rock trail can become very hot.
- Cultural tip: A cup-marked stone along the Saxnerweg is considered a special energy spot with beautiful views.
