Traffic rules in Italy
Drivers are required to have safety vests in their cars in Italy, Austria and Germany. Cars are required to drive on dipped headlights during the day on Italian motorways and country roads (outside built-up areas). The maximum speed is 90 km/h on state roads and 130 km/h on motorways. There’s an extensive network of filling stations and almost one in two sells LPG. In general, in the major towns and cities parking is only permitted in the spaces provided. Short-stay car parks, the majority of which are Pay & Display, are marked with a blue border. These are complemented by specially designated car parks and underground parking in most places. Free parking can often be found outside towns and sometimes there’s a shuttle bus into the centre.

Questions & Answers

Renovation of the Lueg Bridge on the Brenner Motorway A13
As part of an extensive renovation of the Lueg Bridge on the Brenner Motorway A13, traffic restrictions will come into effect starting January 1, 2025.
Two-lane traffic on the Lueg Bridge
From June 4 to October 5, 2025, continuous two-lane traffic will be in place in both directions.
All vehicles over 3.5 tons must use the left, inner lane to reduce the load on the supporting structure.

Both lanes are available for car traffic.
Plan your journey on the Brenner motorway using the updated Lueg Bridge traffic calendar – it includes all important dates and relevant traffic information.
How does the monitoring system work?
The monitoring system is based on a scale integrated into the road, which detects during driving if vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons are incorrectly in the right lane. If this is the case, the vehicle will be diverted before the bridge for reweighing. It will then be directed to the correct lane (left lane). These checks take place in Nößlach and Brenner and are carried out by staff.
Can I avoid the Lueg Bridge?
Yes, the Lueg Bridge can be bypassed by traveling via the Reschenpass/Resia Pass or the Felbertauernstraße.
From Mittersill and Lienz, you can reach South Tyrol via the B100 road. This route is open all year round.

A particularly convenient and sustainable alternative is the train, which remains fully operational during the renovation work.
The railway line over the Brenner Pass offers frequent and reliable connections and is a comfortable and eco-friendly travel option.

Important notice
Even in case of traffic congestion, it is strongly advised not to use the B182 (old Brenner road).
Choosing this route can worsen local traffic conditions and may lead to penalties due to transit restrictions.
How long will the construction work take?
The first bridge pillar is expected to be fully renovated within two and a half to three years. From this point on, two lanes will be available again. The entire bridge is expected to be completed by the year 2030.
How can I get information?
In the coming weeks, a schedule with all measures and restrictions will be published on the official ASFINAG website.
The official ASFINAG website can be found here: A 13 Brenner Motorway Single Lane Lueg Bridge | ASFINAG.
From September 2024 to the end of 2026, the Reschen Road B180 will be undergoing construction to build a rockfall gallery between Kajetansbrücke/Pfunds and Nauders. During this period, the road will be closed at certain times.

-Until Sunday, 30 November (subject to change), alternating one-way traffic will be regulated by a construction traffic light in both directions between the Kajetansbrücke south of Pfunds and the lower Finstermünz tunnel north of Nauders.

-From September to November 2026, a final full closure will take place for completion work and asphalt paving.

Alternative Route:
During closures, traffic will be rerouted via Switzerland. The detour runs along the Engadin Road (B184) and Martinsbruck Road (B185). This route adds approximately 6.6 km to the journey and may take about 10 minutes longer, depending on traffic.
A de-tailed route planner (Kajetansbrücke/Pfunds) for the detour can be found here: Google Maps Route Planner

Important traffic information:

Cars: Rerouted via the Engadin Road (B184) and Martinsbruck Road (B185).
Trucks, vehicles with trailers over 6.5 m, and buses over 13 m: These vehicles cannot use the detour and must take a longer alternative route.

Heavy vehicle tolls:
Vehicles over 3.5 tons are required to pay a heavy vehicle tax at the Swiss customs office in Martina. The fee is €5 per trip per vehicle and is collected on-site.
