Hiking in cultural landscapes & walking trails

Schenna is the ideal stage for great hiking fun surrounded by Mediterranean flair and South Tyrolean charm.

The lovingly maintained walking trails around the sun-kissed village guarantee active holidays from spring to late autumn. The Höfeweg farm trail above Schenna/Scena connects several historical farms and offers an insight into life and work on the mountain farmsteads.

The Wiesenweg meadow path, for example, leads past all cultural sites and offers magnificent views on the surrounding mountains: the mausoleum, built in neo-Gothic style from red sandstone - the grave of Archduke Johann and his wife Anna Plochl - the old parish church from the 12th/13th century, built in Romanesque style, the later added new parish church in neo-Gothic style, the small Romanesque St. Martin's Church from 1200 and thus the oldest monument of Schenna and the most interesting of its kind in South Tyrol, the stately Schenna Castle with its magnificent Renaissance knight's hall including an impressive collection of weapons from eight centuries as well as wonderful paintings, the round church in St. Georgen, with wonderful frescoes from the 14th century and a rare representation of the 17th century Holy Kummernus, Thurn Castle and the crucifix Kampfl Kreuz.

Along the Schenner Waalweg irrigation channel path, excursionists are accompanied for two hours by the calming splashing of the centuries-old irrigation channel through pine forests, orchards and pastures overlooking the Meran/Merano basin. Below Schenna, the Maiser Waalweg irrigation channel path leads through the apple orchards along the Passer river to Saltaus/Saltusio. Formerly used to irrigate the orchards and vineyards along the Etschtal Valley/Val d’Adige, the Waalwege trails leading along the centuries-old waterways offer easy walks for everyone. Together with nine other Waalwege trails, Schenna's irrigation trails form part of the 80-km Meraner Waalrunde Circuit Trail.

And via the panorama promenade Mitterplattweg or the Maiser Waalweg irrigation channel path, the spa town of Merano is within walking distance, passing through orchards and vineyards.
