Heini Holzer Via Ferrata on Mount Ifinger

A High-Alpine Adventure Above Schenna and Meran

The Heini Holzer Via Ferrata on Mount Ifinger, just above Schenna, is an unforgettable experience for anyone drawn to mountain air, panoramic views, and Alpine adventure. Named after legendary South Tyrolean alpinist Heini Holzer, the route follows the steep southwest face of Schenna’s local mountain – offering a mix of physical challenge and breathtaking scenery.

The Meran Mountaineering School (Bergsteigerschule Meran) organizes climbing courses for adults and children at the Fragsburg Rock Gym. In the event of bad weather, the Rockarena indoor gym in Gampenstraße in Meran is an alternative venue.

The Heini Holzer Via Ferrata stretches for about 1,000 meters, climbing 550 vertical meters up the southwest face of Mount Ifinger. The starting point is Piffinger Köpfl, just above the mountain station of Meran 2000. From there, the route follows striking rock formations – well protected by steel cables all the way up.

The first section is designed to ease you in: wide steps, moderate exposure, and enough time to get used to the gear. But the terrain soon gets steeper. Short climbs, narrow traverses, and a few exposed passages make for real via ferrata vibes. Iron steps help out on trickier parts, making the route accessible not just for pros, but also for fit beginners and sporty families.
What makes this climb special is the mix of impressions: at one moment you're crossing smooth rock slabs, the next you're picking your way through gullies and ledges. And again and again, the view opens up: the Dolomites to the east, the Etschtal Valley far below, and the Texelgruppe Nature Park to the west.

Just before the top comes the highlight: the famous “Engelskante”. This exposed stretch of solid rock feels like you're floating above it all – and it's the perfect finale to the climb.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Elevation gain: approx. 550 meters
  • Cable length: around 1,000 meters
  • Difficulty: A – B – B/C (moderate)
  • Duration: 3 to 4 hours
  • Orientation: Southwest – climbable from spring through late fall

Thanks to its southwest exposure, the route gets plenty of sun and can often be climbed early in the season. Just one important tip: bring enough water – there are no refill points along the way.
