Questions & Answers

Renovation of the Lueg Bridge on the Brenner Motorway A13
As part of an extensive renovation of the Lueg Bridge on the Brenner Motorway A13, traffic restrictions will come into effect
What do I need to know about the temporary two-lane traffic on the Lueg Bridge?
On days with heavy traffic, both lanes of the bridge can be used in two-lane operation. Cars may use both lanes. However, special rules apply to vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes: they must use the left lane, i.e., the inner side of the bridge, to reduce the load on the structure. A monitoring system has been installed to ensure compliance with this regulation.

The days on which the two-lane operation is active can be found in the calendar below.
Plan your journey on the Brenner motorway using the updated Lueg Bridge traffic calendar – it includes all important dates and relevant traffic information.
How does the monitoring system work?
The monitoring system is based on a scale integrated into the road, which detects during driving if vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons are incorrectly in the right lane. If this is the case, the vehicle will be diverted before the bridge for reweighing. It will then be directed to the correct lane (left lane). These checks take place in Nößlach and Brenner and are carried out by staff.
Can I avoid the Lueg Bridge?
Yes, the Lueg Bridge can be bypassed by traveling via the Reschenpass/Resia Pass or the Felbertauernstraße.
From Mittersill and Lienz, you can reach South Tyrol via the B100 road. This route is open all year round.

A particularly convenient and sustainable alternative is the train, which remains fully operational during the renovation work.
The railway line over the Brenner Pass offers frequent and reliable connections and is a comfortable and eco-friendly travel option.

Important notice
Even in case of traffic congestion, it is strongly advised not to use the B182 (old Brenner road).
Choosing this route can worsen local traffic conditions and may lead to penalties due to transit restrictions.
How long will the construction work take?
The first bridge pillar is expected to be fully renovated within two and a half to three years. From this point on, two lanes will be available again. The entire bridge is expected to be completed by the year 2030.
How can I get information?
In the coming weeks, a schedule with all measures and restrictions will be published on the official ASFINAG website.
The official ASFINAG website can be found here: A 13 Brenner Motorway Single Lane Lueg Bridge | ASFINAG.
Real time travel time information
The Resia Pass is open. Traffic is controlled by traffic lights until December 2026.

The reason for the works is the construction of a new rockfall protection gallery on the Austrian section between Pfunds and Nauders, designed to better protect the road from rockfalls and landslides in the long term.

For travellers, the important thing to know is: traffic across the Reschen Pass continues to run smoothly.

With a little patience at the traffic lights, guests usually reach their destination without major delays.

September – November 2026: final full road closure for finishing construction works and asphalt paving.

Alternative route during closures
During the short full closures, traffic will be diverted via Switzerland.
The diversion follows the Engadiner Straße (B184) and the Martinsbrucker Straße (B185).
Route length: approx. 6.6 km longer
Additional travel time: approx. 10 minutes, depending on traffic

Important information for campers and motorhomes
Motorhomes and camper vans can still use the Reschen Pass without any problems.
Motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes: no additional fees, even when using the diversion through Switzerland.
Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes: when using the Swiss diversion route, a flat heavy vehicle charge of €5 per vehicle and trip applies. This fee must be paid at the Swiss customs office in Martina.
The diversion route is well developed and suitable for motorhomes.

Our tip: plan your route in advance – this way you can travel across the Reschen Pass relaxed even during the construction works.
