General description

This is the legendary Gorge of 1,000 Steps, on the Merano High Mountain trail. In fact, there are "just" 987 steps, but be warned ... your knees may be shaking after the descent!

Katharinaberg, Schnalstal valley

The hike starts at the Texelbahn cableway mountain station, constantly leading westwards on Route No. 24. The trail passes through ravines and gorges, some with stairs and stone steps. The traditional mountain farms found along the way provide hikers with the opportunity for some rest and refreshment. From Linthof, the route runs into Schnalstal valley, to the village of Katharinaberg/Monte Santa Caterina, at 1245 m.

free of charge, all-day, in the designated parking area, unguarded

Public transport

From Merano: train 250 or Bus 251 to Rabland/Rablà, then Bus 265 to the Texelbahn.
From Vinschgau valley: train 250 or Bus 251 to Rabland, then Bus 265 to the Texelbahn.
From Katharinaberg, in Schnalstal Valley: bus 261 from Katharinaberg in Schnalstal to Naturns/Naturno and then bus 266 to the Texelbahn
