Special Opening of the ruins Festenstein

The ruins of Festenstein (Castelforte) speaks for itself: the position, the view are out of the ordinary. It is unique in South Tyrol!

Festenstein Castle can be described as a landmark of Andrian. It dominates the village from a lofty, rocky outcrop above the gorge of the Gaid stream. This strategic location was likely chosen so that enemy weapons could never reach the castle. The location also offers a spectacular 360° view across the lower part of the Etsch Valley. Festenstein was first mentioned in written documents in the mid-13th century. In 2008, Count Meinhard Khuen-Belasi purchased the castle ruins and, in cooperation with the South Tyrolean Office for Cultural Heritage, commissioned various restoration measures to stabilize the walls and protect the castle from further deterioration.

Festenstein can only be reached via a steep one-hour hiking trail (20 minutes downhill from the hamlet of Gaid).

Special openings: 10:00–15:00.
