Dialoghi Merano - in German language: Raus aus dem Rummel
Eberhard Daum in conversation with tourism critic and hotelier Michil Costa. Free entry.
He abhors the development of tourism in South Tyrol and throughout the Alpine region. Although Michil Costa himself is a successful operator of luxury hotels, he has been fighting against what he calls fairground tourism for many years.
He tirelessly criticises environmental degradation, the proliferation of entertainment venues, the trend towards interchangeable hotels and the commercialisation of tourism based on clichés.
Costa's book ‘Raus aus dem Rummel’ (Out of the Fairground) is a relentless critique of the tourism industry and its excesses. ‘Keep growing, get even bigger, earn even more money,’ he writes, ‘that's all we care about... But if growth is our highest value, then we are not far from disaster.’
On Friday, 17 April 2026, Michil Costa will be a guest at the ‘Merano Dialogues’. In conversation with Eberhard Daum, he will discuss what he sees as the misguided development of tourism in South Tyrol, but will also point out alternatives and ways out of the impasse.
