Castle Katzenstein

The Katzenstein Castle is a historic medieval castle above Merano, known for its panoramic location and well-preserved architecture.

The Katzenstein Castle is situated above Maia and Labers in the Freiberg district of Merano. Surrounded by vineyards and chestnut groves, it offers sweeping views across the Adige Valley. It was first documented in 1258 as the residence of the Tyrolean parish priest family Katzenstein. The lower section of the keep, with walls up to 1.7 meters thick, dates from this period.

In the 16th century, the castle was acquired by the Katzbeck family, who expanded it and added Renaissance architectural elements, including the entrance portal from 1553 and decorative windows. The castle chapel features a Gothic vault and a 17th-century altar.

Over the centuries, Katzenstein Castle changed hands several times. Today, it is a significant historical monument that reflects the medieval and Renaissance heritage of the Merano region.
