Sacro Cuore Church

Built in 1903, the Sacro CuoreChurch is located on the historic Sandplatz, near Merano's old town.

Designed by the Austrian architect Ferdinand Mungenast, the church is an outstanding example of Neo-Romanesque architecture. The colorful mosaic by the South Tyrolean artist Rudolf Margreiter is particularly noteworthy.

Originally, the church was the chapel of the neighboring Institute of the English Ladies (Congregatio Jesu), a religious order that made significant contributions to education in South Tyrol. However, due to a lack of new recruits, the order sold the entire building complex to the Province of South Tyrol in 2012.

Since 2017, the church has served as a youth church. In addition to religious services, it also hosts cultural events, exhibitions, concerts, and educational programs. There's even an escape room! This is an ideal example of the city's cultural heritage and modern community life. Today, the church is a protected historical monument.

From the Merano train station, we recommend taking the busline 221 or 4 and get off the stop "piazza teatro". From there it's a seven-minute walk to the church.

It is recommended to park your car somewhere in the city center near the theater square, as the church does not offer parking spaces.
