Winter hike from Stuls to Egger-Grub-Alm Alp

A popular winter hike.

In good conditions and when there’s enough (but not too much) snow, this hike can be completed without any problems. The trail is regularly maintained using a tracked snow groomer. On the farm track along the hairpin bends are clearly-marked shortcuts, but in winter these tracks are usually inaccessible or should at least be negotiated with care.

Directions

From the car park in Stuls, follow the surfaced Hochegger Straße westwards. The route initially passes several farms before continuing through the forest to Morx Puite. From there, continue along the Hochegger Straße, which is lined in places by high, steep rock faces, until you reach the Hochegg farm settlement. Just before the settlement, you will find the last available parking area.

Above the Hochegg settlement, the track turns eastwards and continues mainly through the forest, climbing more steeply through several hairpin bends. Shortly before the Stuls mountain meadows, the extensive alpine pastures, a fairly wide trail branches off to the left. It initially leads westwards, then north-eastwards through the forest and, in the upper section, across alpine meadows to Egger-Grub-Alm Alp.

From Egger-Grub-Alm Alp, follow the same route back to Stuls.

Recommended equipment

Wear warm, weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy and waterproof hiking boots and, if necessary, traction aids such as microspikes or crampons. Walking poles can provide additional support on snowy and slippery trails.

• Coming from Meran towards the Passeiertal Valley, take the Jaufenstraße SS44 to St. Leonhard, continue on the Timmelsjochstraße to Moos. After Moos, turn right and continue to Stuls

• Coming from the Timmelsjoch, take the Timmelsjochstraße until just before Moos, then turn left and continue to Stuls

• Coming from the Jaufenpass towards St. Leonhard, take the Jaufenstraße SS44, continue on the Timmelsjochstraße towards Moos and further along the Timmelsjochstraße. After Moos, turn right and continue to Stuls

Always stay on marked trails, check the current weather and snow conditions before setting off, and take particular care on icy, slippery or snow-covered sections.

Take enough water and food with you and plan your hike so that you return before it gets dark.

Check the current trail conditions in advance and take note of any closures or avalanche warnings.

When there’s enough snow on the ground, use the #14B farm road. Please note that forest track (no. 14) is very steep and is usually not maintained in winter! Minor snow-falls may occur along the trail above the Hochegg farmsteads and on the steep slopes below. Beneath the Hochegg-Höfe farmsteads, be on the lookout for clumps of ice falling from the rocks. When snow is scarce, certain sections of the Hochegg farm road and forest track can be icy, which is particularly problematic and dangerous during the descent.
