Winter excursion to the St. Jakob's Church in Grissian/Grissiano

General description

Hike to the beautiful St. Jakob's Church in Grissiano with his pictures from the beginning of the XIII century.

Attention: the path is not cleared in winter and can be icy in places. Always wear good shoes!

Route description

Starting from the car park in Prissiano village centre (near the Raiffeisen bank) turn right over the old wood-covered stone bridge and immediately to the right of the chapel uphill (trail marked no. 8). Next turn right, briefly uphill on the road to Grissiano, and at the next fork turn right again towards Waldsteig and trail no. 12 uphill to a residential area. Here, right by the building with the flat roof in the south-western corner of the development is where the Waldsteig (forest track) begins. Follow this moderate uphill climb through cool forest for approx. 1 hour until you come to the Grissianerhof and Schmiedlhof (refreshment stops). Next turn right along the main road for approx. 300 m, until a broad, gravel farm track branches off to the St. Jakob's Church; the path was created as a “contemplative trail on the seven sacraments” with light-flooded pillars by the glass artist, Christoph Gabrieli from Tesimo. After approx. 20 minutes you will reach the St. Jakob's Church with its Romanesque frescoes which are well worth seeing (in winter open only at weekends).
Head back along the same route to the Schmiedlhof, but now take the quiet road downhill back to Prissiano (route no. 8) until turning right just above the Saxiller Keller along trail 12A towards "Großkemat" and "Wehrburg". Pass them and turn left back to the main road and then left back to the stone bridge and the centre of Prissiano.
Alternatively, at Wehrburg Castle turn right onto the "Schlossrundweg/Castle Circular Trail" and walk past Castle Katzenzungen and the Versoaln vine back to the village centre (about 25 min. more walking time).
