Ski vacations in the South Tyrolean Alps

The five ski areas in the Merano region in South Tyrol/Südtirol offer winter sports at all levels. Above the spa town of Merano/Meran is the Merano 2000 family ski area. The romantic Vigiljoch ski area is also located not far from town, which is especially impressive for anyone seeking peace and tranquility. The nearby car-free mountain village of Plan/Pfelders, with its focus on environmental sustainability, offers both family-friendly and challenging ski slopes.

Winter sports fans will find demanding runs and excitement at the Schwemmalm ski area in quaint Val d’Ultimo/Ultental Valley. The Schnalstal Glacier ski area is impressive and attracts more adventurous skies with slopes rising up to 3,200m a.s.l. The ski season at the glacier area lasts from September to May.

Lazinsertal Valley Cross-Country Skiing Trail
9.4 km
prepared

The wide track is well suited to skating and classic skiing, and is maintained on a daily basis. Just before and after arriving in Lazines/Lazins, there’s a trail to Zeppichl. This cross-country skiing trail is freely accessible without restrictions and has easy, medium-difficulty and challenging sections. On the way back to Plan/Pfelders (or Zeppichl) there’re a number of rapid descents, where skiers need to be on the lookout for pedestrians and oncoming cross-country skiers.

The route from Plan to the Lazinser Alm mountain pasture is rather tricky due in part to the long ascent and steep incline. But at the refuge in the wide valley basin below, one can enjoy almost effortless skiing at 680 m per lap on a 15 m run. The lap around Lazines is more challenging, at 1,336 m per lap on a 52 m run.
