Merano and Environs in South Tyrol

The spa town of Merano lies in the heart of the region of South Tyrol on the southern side of the Alps. Due to its location, this multicultural city is considered as the gateway to the south of Europe, as well as a meeting place between different cultures.

Merano and its surrounding towns and valleys benefit in many ways from their favorable location. The Merano basin offers a mild climate year round, creating a unique atmosphere where Mediterranean gardens in full bloom sit beneath snow-covered Alpine peaks. This mixture of Germanic and Italian culture has also led to a specific local cuisine characterized by both Mediterranean and Alpine traditions.

On Easter Monday, the racing season opens in Merano with the traditional Haflinger Horse Races, accompanied by a festive parade through the city center featuring horses and riders in South Tyrolean costume.🏇🏁

Celebrating its 130th edition, this unique event is exclusively dedicated to Haflinger horses and combines living heritage with professional sport. A special highlight this year is the nostalgic “Bauerngalopprennen anno dazumal”, where former child riders aged 50 and over return to the track, reviving the spirit of the historic race.

The Partschins Waterfall plunges 97 metres over a dramatic rock face and is at its most powerful during spring snowmelt. On sunny days, rainbow mist fills the air, creating a refreshing microclimate. The waterfall is easily reached via marked hiking trails or public transport from Partschins, set within the scenic Zieltal valley.💧⛰

In the Naturns Region, the St. Proculus Church and its adjoining museum bring some 1 500 years of history to life. The unassuming church houses remarkable pre-Romanesque and Gothic frescoes from the 7th to 14th centuries, including the famous ‘man on a swing’ – one of the oldest preserved mural cycles in the Alpine area. Opposite the church, the underground museum guides visitors through multiple historical eras and displays original frescoes and archaeological finds that reflect the art, faith and everyday life of past generations. ⛪✨
