Merano and Environs in South Tyrol

The spa town of Merano lies in the heart of the region of South Tyrol on the southern side of the Alps. Due to its location, this multicultural city is considered as the gateway to the south of Europe, as well as a meeting place between different cultures.

Merano and its surrounding towns and valleys benefit in many ways from their favorable location. The Merano basin offers a mild climate year round, creating a unique atmosphere where Mediterranean gardens in full bloom sit beneath snow-covered Alpine peaks. This mixture of Germanic and Italian culture has also led to a specific local cuisine characterized by both Mediterranean and Alpine traditions.

Waalwege are traditional walking paths that follow historic irrigation channels, built centuries ago to bring water from mountain streams to fields and orchards. Today, these paths are among the most unique hiking experiences in the Merano region. They run mostly flat along the slopes, making them ideal for relaxed walks, families and anyone looking to explore nature without steep climbs.🥾💧

Goaßlschnöllen is a traditional South Tyrolean folk custom where specially made whips create loud, rhythmic cracking sounds. Once used by farmers and shepherds for communication and seasonal rituals, it is now celebrated at village festivals and competitions, where skill, rhythm, and technique are judged.🏔🌳

The fishing season begins as early as the second Sunday in February and lasts until October 31. Around Merano, numerous spots offer brown trout, rainbow trout and char in clear waters.🐟🎣

Top spots:
• Passer, fast-flowing waters with good catch opportunities
• Ultental with the Falschauer, ideal for fly fishing.
• Mountain lakes (e.g. Zoggler, Grünsee, Schwarzsee), quiet spots at higher altitudes.

An Italian fishing licence and a daily permit are required. Daily permits are available online via the Südtirol Fishing App.
