Castle Kallmünz

Kallmünz Castle is located directly behind the Sandplatz Piazza della Rena and is one of the city's most important historical residences. The castle is named after Andre Kallmünzer, who settled in Merano in the first half of the 15th century. He likely came from a noble family in Regensburg and became mayor of Merano in 1441. In 1516, Emperor Maximilian I ennobled the Kallmünzer family, and they later received the title of count.

Construction of the castle began in the 16th century. The complex consists of two main buildings connected by walls surrounding an inner courtyard. The courtyard can be accessed from the Sandplatz through a pointed archway.
Among the castle's most striking features are its elegant oriel windows, which give the facade a distinctive and vibrant appearance. Over the centuries, this castle has been owned by numerous noble families.

Kallmünz Castle remains privately owned and has been a listed historical monument since 1951. Although the building is generally not open to the public, its historic courtyards are occasionally used for cultural events, making it an important part of Merano's architectural and cultural heritage.

If you are at Merano train station, we recommend taking either bus line 1 or 4 and getting off at the Elisabethpark stop on Cavour-Street. From there it is only a 2-minute walk to the square.

There is no parking available near the castle. We recommend parking in the "St. Josef Parking Merano" car park on Franz-Innerhofer-Street; from there it is a 5-minute walk to the castle.

Since the castle itself is privately owned, access is only permitted on special occasions. However, the Schloss Kallmünz restaurant is located on the grounds and occupies part of the property.
