Merano High Mountain Trail: Westwards – to the Gorge of 1,000 Steps to Katharinaberg, in Senales Valley/ Schnalstal

This is the legendary Gorge of 1,000 Steps, on the Merano High Mountain trail. In fact, there are "just" 987 steps, but be warned ... your knees may keep shaking well after the descent!

Directions
The hike starts at the Texelbahn cableway mountain station, constantly leading westwards on Route No. 24. The trail passes through ravines and gorges, some with stairs and stone steps. The traditional mountain farms found along the way provide hikers with the opportunity for some rest and refreshment. From Linthof, the route runs into Senales Valley/ Schnalstal, to the village of Katharinaberg/ Monte Santa Caterina, at 1245 m.
 
Alternative routes
If the hike is too long in its entirety, there are several short-cuts leading down into the valley such as: - after Hochforchweg turn left along Route No. 29/39 to Plaus. After the “1000 steps” close to Grub Weg take Route No. 6 towards Naturns/ Naturno and after Galmein left on Route No. 24b continue  to Unterstell. From there, the cableway leads down to Naturno in the valley.
 
Parking
Texelbahn Valley Station, Zielstraße road, Rablà/ Rabland
All-day parking, in the designated parking lot. Parking for campers only between 7.00 am – 7.00 pm

Public Transport
From Merano: the Venosta Valley Train or Bus 251 to Rablà, then Bus 265 to the Texelbahn Cableway.
From Venosta Valley: the Venosta Valley Train or Bus 251 to Rablà, then Bus 265 to the Texelbahn Cableway.
From Katharinaberg, in Senales Valley/ Schnalstal back to the cableway Texelbahn:
Bus 261 from Katharinaberg in Senales to Naturno and then bus 266 to the cableway Texelbahn
