The Apple in Lana

A Fruit That Connects

As the largest apple-growing community in South Tyrol, Lana builds a bridge between natural landscapes and cultural heritage. The apple connects past and future, hard work and pure enjoyment – and above all, people. One of nature’s most beautiful events is the apple blossom in Lana, which usually begins in late March or early April, depending on late winter and spring temperatures. A sea of white and pink petals transforms the landscape into a floral wonder. Discover why this sweet fruit is so deeply rooted in our local tradition and plays such an important role in South Tyrol’s apple culture.
All About Apples!

Apple farming is at the heart of life in the Lana region. Around 7,000 local apple growers cultivate not only apples but also other fruits, vegetables, and wine. Across South Tyrol, about 1 million tons of apples are harvested every year on just 18,400 hectares – only about 3% of the region’s total area.

About 90,000 tons of this impressive yield come from the Lana area alone. Over 25 apple varieties grow here, from timeless classics like Golden Delicious to newer, innovative types like the tropical and fruity Scilate / envy™ and the sweet, aromatic Cosmic Crisp®.
South Tyrol is also the largest supplier of organic apples in the EU – around a quarter of all organic apples produced in Europe come from this region.

The Orchard Cam in Lana

The fruit orchards of the Lana region are a true natural spectacle – especially in spring, when white and pink buds burst into bloom. With our live orchard webcam, you can enjoy the view year-round and follow the seasonal cycle of the apple orchards up close.

In January and February, the orchards rest in complete stillness – the trees are essentially asleep. But in March and April, the awakening begins with budding and blossoming. If the bees do their job well, the first tiny fruits begin to grow in May and June. July and August mark the key ripening phase, when farmers watch the weather closely – it now determines the flavor, size, and quality of the apples.
In August, September and October, the apples are hand-harvested. Before the trees return to their winter rest, the freshly picked apples are stored, sorted, sold, or processed.
