Photography exhibition of Massimo Giovannini

Variation on a Theme is a project by Massimo Giovannini that transforms a technical and repetitive gesture from commercial photography into a practice of radical observation. Starting from the standardized image of a product on a neutral background—typical of e-commerce—the artist shifts attention to what usually escapes the eye: the minimal differences between seemingly identical elements. Each item contained within a package—pasta, candies, biscuits, or other industrial products—is photographed individually with the same technical rigor, revealing variations in shape, surface, and proportion. In this way, repetition does not produce uniformity, but rather a constellation of singularities. The title encapsulates the core of the project: the “theme” is the serial model, the shared matrix, while the “variation” is the deviation—the imperfection, the unexpected singularity. Within the visual memory of the work, a dialogue emerges with the seriality of Pop Art and with Campbell's Soup Cans by Andy Warhol. Yet, while Warhol used repetition to reflect on consumption and the industrial icon, Giovannini transforms it into a poetic instrument to affirm difference within multiplicity. The installation consists of individual prints that, when assembled in space, form monumental and unique visual aggregates adapted to the exhibition site, or collections of sub-compositions that condense their rhythm and perceptual energy. The result is a work that combines formal rigor, aesthetic strength, and a reflection on identity—reminding us that what appears identical at first glance always reveals difference when observed closely.

From the city center you can reach the Culture Centre with a 5-minute walk or in just a few minutes by bike, following the cycle path that runs along the Ponte della Posta bridge and passes the Sissi statue.
