Merano/Meran is surrounded by a dense network of Waalwege trails. These walks lead along the irrigation channels for orchards. Easily accessible from Merano, they offer the possibility of relaxing walks in a quiet location with beautiful surrounding views. Along the largely flat irrigation channel trails there are also several traditional mountain inns offering local specialties in a pleasant, rustic atmosphere.
Some of these trails (such as the popular Maiser Waalweg trail) can be accessed directly from Merano. The 80 km long Meraner Waalrunde Circuit Trail connects eleven of these Waalwege trails.
For those who do not feel like simply walking, the Merano High Mountain Trail offers ideal conditions for more demanding tours. The approximately 100 km long Merano High Mountain Trail surrounds the Texelgruppe Nature Park, located in northwest to Merano. This multi-day hike between mountain huts consists of several stages (from May to September possible also as single day hikes) and features breathtaking views of the Dolomites, the Rosengarten and the Ortler mountains. We recommend a climb up to the Spronser Seen Lakes, Europe's highest Alpine lake district.
