Set in the sun-filled Vinschgau Valley, Naturns and Plaus combine ideal natural conditions for
apple growing. The alpine-Mediterranean climate, the sheltered altitude and
abundant sunshine create perfect conditions for growth. Yet it is the people who truly make the difference: with experience, passion and skilled hands, the farmers of Naturns and Plaus care for their orchards every day. The result is apples of outstanding flavour and top quality, deeply rooted in the region.
The Location
Naturns and Plaus lie in the sunny Lower Vinschgau Valley and are among South Tyrol’s best apple-growing regions. The orchards extend over altitudes of approximately 500 to 1,000 meters. This special location provides ideal conditions: abundant sunlight, crisp mountain air, and a sheltered valley where the apple trees thrive.
The Microclimate
A unique combination of many hours of sunshine, low rainfall, and the characteristic Vinschgau Valley wind shapes the climate in Naturns and Plaus. This microclimate allows the fruit to ripen slowly, giving the apples their natural sweetness and an intense, even coloration.
Natural Temperature Fluctuations
Especially in the weeks before harvest, the marked differences between warm days and cool nights become noticeable. These temperature fluctuations promote the coloring of the apples and play a key role in developing their balanced flavor.
Frost Irrigation – Protecting the Blossoms
In spring, when nighttime temperatures drop to around freezing, farmers in Naturns and Plaus use
frost irrigation. The delicate blossoms are coated with a thin layer of ice, which protects them from freezing. This proven technique highlights the importance of experience and expertise in apple cultivation.
