At the end of November, several historical cellars, courtyards and castles in Meran/Merano and its surrounding areas are transformed into traditional Christmas markets. Local artists and artisans from the nearby South Tyrolean villages offer local products for sale, and Christmas lights and music help create a special South Tyrolean holiday atmosphere, especially in the Advent markets held at Tyrol Castle and St. Leonhard/S. Leonardo.
The Christmas market in Meran (Meraner Weihnacht in German) in the center of the spa town is especially spectacular. The Christmals market is a certified Green Event, and is known for its environmentally friendly emphasis on local and seasonal products. Small wooden stalls line the streets. At Thermenplatz square, giant Christmas bulbs welcome visitors to dine in an uniquely festive atmosphere between the ice skating rink and the famed Terme Meran thermal baths. Traditional music and brass bands also add to the holiday mood.
